End of Season Celebrations

Despite the summer holidays, a good number of Redditch's now 30+ members got together for a curry at the New Dilshad in Alverchurch to celebrate the end of another competitive season, at least until September. The club's secretary, Dan Lambourne, somehow managed fit all of Redditch's trophy haul from the various competitions into his car and pictures of team members who were present on the night can be seen below*.

Thank you to all our members for their efforts throughout the season, even if it's just turning up for a couple of club nights, and hopefully some time off will leave everybody refreshed and ready for the new season!

*Typically a team will range from four to six players, with larger squads required normally for the higher divisions and open cups.

2025/2026 Club Classical Champion

The final of the 2025/2026 Redditch Chess Club Knockout Championship took place at the Meadow Farm club venue on 08/07/26 with Ben Attwell (pictured below) winning a closely fought game against David Smith to become the 2026 Club Champion. Well played both!

Bughouse Event

Redditch Chess Club hosted an OTB bughouse* event with visiting players from Worcester at the Meadow farm club on 01/07/26. It didn't take too long for chaos to descend on the boards. The interesting and unusual evening was thoroughly enjoyed by all.

*Bughouse is chess variant for four players, with two teams of two playing against their opponent. When you capture one of your opponent's pieces, you hand it over to your teammate. On each players turn they can either make a standard move, or 'drop' - ie place - one of the captured pieces from their team mate onto an empty square on the board to aid their attack or defense.

2025/2026 Club Rapid and Blitz Champions

Pictured is Redditch Chess Club President, Glenn Cox, presenting David Smith with the Redditch Quickplay trophy for winning the season long Rapidplay Tournament. David Smith has also reached the final of the Standard-play Knockout Trophy where he will face Ben Attwell in July, whilst Dan Lambourne retained the Phil Church Trophy for winning the pre-season Blitz.

Redditch Chess Club President's Report

Redditch Chess Club Preseident, Glenn Cox, presented their end of season report at the Redditch AGM:

"I am pleased to report on another excellent season for Redditch Chess Club.Starting with the Birmingham League, Redditch kept their place in Division 1 amongst strongopposition. It must be a considerable challenge playing in that Division, and I congratulateall who do.
In Division 3 Redditch finished third, just outside the promotion places. If I can mentionindividuals, Ben had another fine season with 9 points from 11 games.There was great news from Division 5, where Redditch A finished top of the table,undefeated. Here Scott Russell and Joe Tipping each contributed 8.5 points. On top of that,Redditch B were not far behind in 4th place. These results illustrate the strength in depththat the club currently enjoys.
Redditch also continued to be (probably) the leading club in Worcestershire, winning boththe Championship and the Challengers League. I don't have individual figures, but theremust have been some strong performances.I would like to congratulate all players and captains who have contributed to theseoutstanding results.
As usual, special thanks go to Dan for all he does for the club. Somehow, he even found timeto be President of the Birmingham League.Finally, I continue to enjoy the team spirit and good humour displayed in the WhatsAppexchanges. Long may it continue."
